June 18 - July 18 Long View in the City OPENING RECEPTION: Thursday, June 18, 6-8pm Victor Ekpuk Ekpuk is inspired by the ancient tradition of ideographic writing systems in Africa. He combines arcane symbols with his own invented pseudo-script to tell a story in his compositions. Of course the languages in which he “writes” are not comprehendible, therefore the stories become not about words themselves but about the forms the words take. Their beauty lies not in their meaning but in their shape, forcing the viewer to see the work rather than read the work. The cultural consciousness Ekpuk creates is inspiring – transforming abandoned languages into a record of permanence in art.

May 16 - June 13 Long View in the City OPENING RECEPTION, Saturday, May 16, 7-9pm Mary Chiaramonte - Haunted Mary’s works are studies of those near to her. Be it friends, family or characters from a song, she tells their story in a snapshot. She paints figures as she sees them, with no faces but as forms to be studied and felt. Despite conventional thought, for Mary, the eyes are not the windows to the soul. She achieves soulful work without ever showing a subject’s face. Perhaps this is because much of Mary’s work is in-part, self-portraiture. She uses the narratives of her subjects to help translate events of her own life, allowing her an added connection to the paintings. Her “headless” images can then be more easily understood to be part Mary, or in our case, part viewer. By removing the most recognizable feature of her subjects, they become less about a specific person and more about a universal feeling or experience, allowing each of us to place ourselves in that space. Mary’s ability to capture emotion through the body gives her otherwise haunting “headless” figures a relatable quality.

Richard Currier has been working on his vision of creating fine art for more than 20 years. His paintings bring ordinary objects to life through his finely tuned technique, which is similar to that of the masters. The drama he instills in his subjects through color, shape, positioning, and space, forms his contemporary and highly compelling body of work. Turbulent and wonderful, his renderings of fruits, vegetables, and meats, truly give life to the still life and create an aura of mystery for anyone viewing his paintings. In his latest series of work, Brooks focuses intently on painting the figure. Highlighted against a backdrop of social, sexual, and psychological themes, the meticulously detailed paintings and drawings of his wide-eyed progeny heighten the impact of the quirky narratives. Often, the details of his paintings only reveal themselves after several viewings and a close study, with new meanings developing at every glance.
This is the largest exhibit of work by the Washington, DC, artist to date. Recent shows include “Tug of War” organized by Billy Shire Fine Arts at Hemphill Fine Arts in DC, “Fresh Meat” at Roq La Rue Gallery in Seattle and several exhibits at La Luz de Jesus in Los Angeles. Brooks is also well respected in the New York City art scene, with two shows in 2007 – one at MDH Fine Arts, in Chelsea, and one at Rapture Café, titled “Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art Show.” March 28 - April 26 Long View in the City OPENING RECEPTION - Friday, March 28 5-8pm New American Paintings: New Work by RObert Sparrow Jones and Jamie Pocklington View Press Release (173 KB)

September 15 - October 13 Long View in the City OPENING RECEPTION - Saturday September 15, 6-8pm Stacie Albano - Nature Perceived View Invitation (65 KB)
View Press Release (265 KB)
Stacie Albano paints landscapes, but her work differs significantly from traditional notions of landscape painting. She only briefly and initially documents a space on her canvas so that her work can present her personal perceptions and memories. Gone are the breezy pastel flowers and soft clouds; they are replaced with blue skies back-painted in an electric orange that peeks through enough to intrigue. Utilizing a surreal color pallette, Albano conveys an emotional connection to a place rather than a physical copy of what she sees. Although influenced by the rural low country around Savannah, Georgia, her work has a modern edge because of her use of a surreal color palette. Albano's work is inviting, inspiring, and intriguiging. View Press Release (175 KB)
Dana Ellyn values her fine arts training but arduously works on peeling away the art school compulsion to make, and hide behind, pretty pictures. Dana's unique perspective and inspiration are drawn from living in the world’s most influential city - she lives and paints less than five blocks from the White House. The allure of a Dana Ellyn painting is that it tells a story; her paintings have meaning, and sometimes the message may come as a shock. Her work is bold and confrontational, often exposing unpleasant aspects of current issues. May 12 - June 2 Long View in the City OPENING RECEPTION Saturday, May 12 6-8pm Alan Rubin's Suspended Animation View Invite

Alan Rubin became a professional artist late in life after a long career as owner-operator of The Biograph Theatre in Georgetown. He creates art that makes the viewer look at life from many angles, from our collective memory and from the surreal subconscious. Rubin captures the moments that are normally fleeting and then conveys their connection to the unknown moments before and after. According to The Washington Post his “bold illustrated scenes resembling ... frames from imaginary movies that look simultaneously familiar and foreign ... often have the look of suspended animation.” April 14 - May 5 Long View in the City OPENING RECEPTION Saturday, April 14 6-8pm Judith Thompson, Woman of Distinction View Invite
View Press Release
The distant looks in the eyes of the women that populate Judith Thompson's paintings both frighten and intrigue the viewer. These women, often regal in stature, find themselves surrounded by symbolic objects and creatures yet they choose to ignore them. Instead, their attention is focused outside the canvas onto the viewer, begging us to question their realized world. Inspired by troubled women of her past as well as stories of her everyday life, Judith paints these women in a way that commands further investigation. With the chin slightly raised and swathed in elaborate clothing, equally sophisticated and snobbish, these women of distinction demand respect. April 7, 6-8pm Long View in the Country Piedmont Environmental Council Fundraiser Long View Gallery and the Piedmond Environmental Council invite you to join us in the fight to keep Dominion Power from expanding in Rappahannock County.

Matt Hollis is a young D.C. area artist who, through his work seeks to create a fantastic space – a space where reality is exaggerated and manifests itself in bold colors and on a grand scale. His series of drawings explores the extraordinary and its relationship with the everyday world. Hollis suggests that “this ethereal, otherworldly dimension coexists with the world we know and it is only a matter of becoming aware of its existence.” Hollis points out, through his work, that nature is a perfect example of what he deems extraordinary integrated into the everyday world. His strong belief in the ability to access this world is seen throughout his pieces – revealed through images such as fingers pressing buttons and antennas picking up frequencies.
